Adesanya vs. Romero Preview

This is the bout for the UFC middleweight title, which is currently in Adesanya’s possession. The fighter from Nigeria became the undisputed champion at UFC 243, and this will be his first title defense. He was supposed to fight Paulo Costa, but the Brazilian suffered a nasty biceps injury, and the plans of the organization had to be changed. Still, Adesanya himself picked the replacement, calling out Romero, who lost to Costa previously. For many, this was a surprising move, but it also drew a lot of attention.

The Last Stylebender (18-0-0, 14KOs) is the fastest rising star in the UFC, and arguably one of the biggest showmen in the sport. Since he entered UFC, he has 7 wins, though we need to admit that four came via decision. Nevertheless, Adesanya’s style and dominance made him one of the most popular athletes in the world, and right now, he is on the quest to become the ultimate face of the UFC.

After beating Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 236, via unanimous decision and winning the interim middleweight title, Adesanya KOd Robert Whittaker at UFC 243 to unify the belts. According to many experts, that was supposed to be the clash when Adesanya met Romero, who lost to Whittaker via split decision in messy circumstances earlier.

We don’t need to say too much about the Nigerian-born fellow. His striking abilities are impressive, and with his frame and reach, so far, he presented an enigma for all rivals. His wrestling is unknown, because we never saw him in that position, but that is mostly due to a fantastic takedown defense, one of the best in the organization ever.

Romero’s Last Chance to Take the Belt

The Cuban is one of the best UFC fighters ever who didn’t win the title. He has a record of one win and two defeats in title fights but has never earned a belt. How is that possible, you may ask. After losing to Whittaker at the UFC 213, in a contest that had an interim title at stake, Romero (13-4, 11 KOs) clashed with Luke Rockhold. He won that fight but was prevented from taking the silverware because he missed weight.

Once again, he had a chance for redemption, but he blew that one too. Whittaker was on his way, but the Cuban again missed weight and was denied a chance to win the title, but anyway, he lost that one via split decision.

The most recent match against Costa was also a defeat after a split decision. But truth to be told, in both of these events, Romero could have easily won, and it wouldn’t be unfair if the result went the other way.

His wrestling is the key here, and if he manages to put Adesanya on his back, the chances for winning are increasing rapidly. But that is easier said than done. All in all, we are ahead of one fantastic spectacle.
